Sustainability

For a better future

A commitment to the territory

The Costa Brava and the Girona Pyrenees have a natural and cultural heritage that we care for every day with passion and a sense of responsibility. Living with this unique landscape inspires us to build a respectful tourism model, which protects what makes us unique and generates value for all. From respect for the environment to the promotion of the local economy and people’s wellbeing, we work to make sustainability a way of being.

Why are we a sustainable destination?

On the Costa Brava and in the Girona Pyrenees, sustainability is not an option: it is a commitment. We protect what makes us unique: the landscape, the biodiversity, the culture and the people. This is because we understand that the future of the territory depends on responsible and balanced tourism.

We are a destination with over 30% of protected territory and a clear commitment to seasonalisation and sustainable mobility. We encourage certification for our services and businesses, and promote practices that respect the natural environment, heritage and the local community. 33 % of the destination is a protected natural area (PNA), with various categories and levels of protection: 7 Natural Parks and 1 Natural Site of National Interest. Of the seven Natural Parks, six are certified under the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (CETS), with around one hundred private companies also certified.

We have a network of thousands of kilometres of waymarked trails suitable for hiking: Itinerània, Camins de l’Aigua de la Selva, Xarxa de Camins de la Cerdanya, and Xarxa de Camins del Baix Empordà.

Over 200 km of traffic‑segregated greenways suitable for cycling, from the Pyrenees to the sea, with 25 new charging points along these routes and on the Pirinexus trail.
A growing intermodality offering that combines public transport and cycling (Garrotxa Soft Smart County, Transcat, Girocleta…).

Around thirty beaches on the Costa Brava and about ten marinas annually receive the international Blue Flag award, which recognizes quality and commitment to environmental improvement.
Our model puts people at the centre: those who visit us, but above all those who live and work here. That’s why we promote local economy, authenticity and quality over the volume of visitors.

We believe in tourism that leaves a footprint, yes, but a positive footprint. It generates opportunities, takes care of the territory and inspires us to do things better.
